Sadler, F. Slack, G. Wilson, C. Young, M. Swinker New student member: Teddy Cromartie Excused: B. Carter, C. Zoni, L. Feldman Guests: Mrs. Jodell Kuzneski and Dr. Lisa Palmer -NAHP dept. Introduced new member, Teddy Cromartie, freshman Comunications Media major. Both kelli Stillwell and Katy Gresh are unable to serve on LSC because of schedule conflicts. Minutes 1/31/02 approved on a Wilson/Young motion. Announced that Dr. Joe Nolan sent revisions to his provisionally approved section of synthesis, LBST 499 Advocacy or Prejudice? Disabilities in Film and Media. Our approval will be forwarded to UWUCC. Announced that BIOL 113 Modern Genetics and Society, Dr. Robert Hinrichsen proposer will attend the 2/21 meeting. Announced that Dr. Jim Mill will attend 2/21 meeting to discuss concerns about NURS 143 proposal. Discussed memo from Yaw Asamoah concerning exceptions to LS requirements. In that he did not make a specific request for action by the LSC, his concerns will be considered as part of the LS review process. Discussed Dr. Ron Emerick's proposal, LBST 499 Out of the Closet, Into the Classroom. A summary of concerns shared by the committee: the course appears to target a specific and exclusive audience -this is reinforced by the title and topical outline; this is problematic because although some students get to actually enroll in the section of their choice for LBST 499, many have to take a seat where one is available. We collectively agree that for the course to be an LBST 499, it needs to appeal to a broader more inclusive audience. how is synthetic thinking fostered in the course -particularly if the student group is homogeneous in make-up regarding sexual orientation, where does the course content lead them? The course seems narrow in that it presents a perspective that could be viewed as "slanted". The topical outline suggests that the course will focus on issues related to the gay, lesbian, bisexual population. In what ways will students be challenged to do synthetic thinking -in what ways will their assumptions be challenged? a suggestion was to consider a course that focuses on literature as a basis for exploring issues related to gay, lesbian and bisexual orientation. For instance, Gays and Lesbians in Literature. Then, using a literature base, students explore stereotypes, prejudices and changes over time in how gays, lesbians and bisexuals are portrayed in the literature. perhaps the course as it is designed is a better fit for LS elective category than LBST 499 Proposal returned to Dr. Emerick for revision Mary Swinker, chair of H&HS College Curriculum, responded to Dr Jim Mills letter to LSC concerning procedural issues at the college curriculum level. NURS 143, Healthy People -Jody Kuzneski and Lisa Palmer responded to questions about the controversy with the HPED chair and specific questions about the proposal. Specific discussion focused on the Personal Wellness Plan -implementation as well as grading; the physical activity component; and their efforts to work collaboratively with HPED. Although Jody Kuzneski remains open to discuss the possibility of team teaching, the proposal is being advanced on its own merit using a single instructor model. Situations were cited where the FDNT faculty use the single instructor model and do not always team teach with HPED. Following their departure, discussed the merits of the course as it addresses the Liberal studies criteria for Health & Wellness category. BS in Marketing -request to add MATH 115 to LS requirements to read: MATH 121 or MATH 115. Problems were identified in that specific courses in the program require MATH 121 (QBUS 215, MGMT 330 and MKTG 421 are problem courses). Returned to proposer for revision. NOTE: After bringing this matter to Dr Garg's attention, they did not intend to add MATH 115 as an option in the final draft and asked that the 115 be deleted as an option for math requirement. Information was communicated to UWUCC.
