Sadler, B. Carter, M. Swinker, F. Slack, C. Young, G Wilson, L. Feldman Excused: C. Zoni, T. Cromartie Minutes from 4/25 approved on a Wilson/Swinker motion. Reported that the BS Education -Earth & Space Science Track was not approved by TECC. The proposal was returned to the department for revision. Discussed the one-week format for LBST 499 Working Together and Safe Living sections. John Cross and Bob Soule forwarded materials for committee review. The committee would like to see the syllabus students receive for the Working Together section as the one we reviewed was based on a standard 14-week semester. Decision was made to request that faculty evaluate the effectiveness of this course delivery model and provide LSC with a report on the feedback. Questions posed by the committee: Are students getting 42 hours of class time exclusive of lunch and breaks? Where is the final exam time added into the week? Are guidelines established at ɫӰ for one-week courses offerings? Reviewed the draft chart for writing proposals loohg for ways to simplify the information we are seeing from proposers. Larry Feldman agreed to make some edits based on committee feedback. Will discuss again in September. On a Wilson/Carter motion, gave approval for Fall 2002 only for Mrs. Margaret Bellak and Dr. Rebecca Hartman in the NAHP department, to teach LBST 499 HIV/AIDS in Society, a section taught by Judy Michaels from the Sociology department. Discussed implications of the Board of Governors 120 credit mandate and the process for implementation of the change. On a Feldman/Wilson motion, the following statement was proposed as it reflects the sentiments of the LSC and will be forwarded to the Academic Planning Council and Provost Staszkiewicz: The Liberal Studies Committee supports the integrity of the current LS program. We agree unanimously that any measure taken at ɫӰ to meet the Board of Governors 120 credit mandate must be carefully considered and be based on sound academic reasoning and not purely on potential financial gains. In that regard, we as a committee look forward to actively participating in creative problem solving to comply with the mandate without sacrifice to what we believe is essential to a liberal education for baccalaureate students. (Committee agreed to confer on the final wording in the statement ---will be sent to all members for input.) Committee membership for 2002-03 AY: C. Zoni (term ends 2003); B. Carter (term ends 2003); M. Swinker (term ends 2004); G. Wilson (term ends 2003); L. Feldman (term ends 2004) -will be replaced for Fall 2002 while on sabbatical leave; F.
