Sadler, F. Slack, G. Wilson, C Young, B. Carter, C. Zoni, M. Swinker Excused: K. Stillwell, K. Gresh, L. Feldman Guest: Dr. Joe Nolan, Special Education Minutes 1/24/02 approved on a Wilson/Zoni motion. Dr. Joe Nolan discussed and responded to questions about his proposal LBST 499 Perceptions of Individuals with Disabilities as Portrayed in Film and Media. On a Zoni/Swinker motion, provisional approval was granted pending the following suggested revisions: revise course objective E. to focus on expected student behavior rather than as a faculty goal begin the first week of course with a discussion of synthesis, e.g. what is synthetic thinking, how will this process of thinking be fostered in the course use UWUCC syllabus of record format, including use of a 14 week semester for the syllabus delete from the course description % of grade designated for particular assignments enrich the bibliography with readings from the specific disciplines the course draws upon, e.g. psychology, sociology, medicine, child development (we are not requiring an exhaustive bibliography but rather several references from the major disciplines that you draw upon in the course) consider a shorter and more enticing title Once revisions are received in the Liberal Studies office, our approval will be forwarded to UWUCC. Reviewed BIOL 113 Modern Genetics and Society, Dr. Robert Hinrichsen proposer. The following issues/questions need clarified: The course title seems to suggest that the course will deal with ethical dilemmas and the impact of genetics on society, yet the course outline appears to be primarily a genetics course that focuses on a biological perspective. The proposer will be asked to clarify the course objectives and make any necessary revisions in either the content or the title. Questions were raised about the term medical bioethics -is this a new term? Committee members were more familiar with the term bio-medical ethics. Does this reflect a typographical error or is the use intentional? Response to Liberal Studies Questions (B) -page 3. Although the proposal addresses the publications and reference texts with authors who represent either minorities or women, there was discussion among committee members of all the racial, ethnic and gender implications possible in a course on genetics. It was agreed that the proposer would be asked to clarify this issue. UWUCC will undoubtedly ask for compliance with the UWUCC syllabus of record format (undergraduate curriculum handbook) The syllabus was otherwise clear and well developed. Action deferred until issues are clarified with proposer. HIST 208 Survey of Latin American History approved for Non-Western Culture and Liberal Studies Elective categories on a Young/Wilson motion. Recommend some rewording of course objectives so they are in parallel form. Reviewed HIST 206 History of East Asia for Liberal Studies elective and Non-western Culture categories. Provisionally approved on a Wilson/Carter motion. Questions about the proposal that need clarified: Whether a title change is requested as well, from History of East Asia to East Asian History, since the cover sheet does include the revised title that is found in the text of the proposal Rationale on page 5 does not address why in lowering the course from a 300 to a 200 level a content revision was unnecessary Senate approved catalog description and course objectives were not available for review as they were not part of the syllabus submitted. It is not clear from the proposal whether the description is changing and/or course objectives. Reviewed proposals for HIST 332 History of Early China, HIST 334 History of Modern China and HIST 337 History of Modern Japan. A common set of questions/issues emerged: As new course proposals, the topical outline of content in the syllabus should be somewhat more detailed (such as found in HIST 335 and HIST 208 proposals). It was difficult to discern the exact number of weeks of content and how many weeks are devoted to paper presentations and exams. Syllabus of record should be submitted in UWUCC format. Additionally, providing more detail about the course content will help committee decide about the rigor of the course. (HIST 337 has more detail than the other two proposals) There was generous discussion about whether the course was suitable for the Liberal Studies Elective category. If intended as an elective for history majors, as stated on page 7, how then will it be attractive to a larger audience of non-history majors? The topical outline and extensive bibliography suggested to committee members that perhaps the course rigor is beyond what should be expected of a student coming into the course with no history prerequisites. If intended for a more specific audience, then the course description should so note the fact. Although we recognize disciplinary differences in writing objectives, please review to ensure the objectives are consistent with expected student outcomes especially for the student without any prerequisite knowledge in the content area. Bibliographical references are extensive for each proposal. Does the bibliography represent references that were used for the purpose of developing the new course, or is it intended for student use throughout the course? HIST 332 History of Early China -it is difficult to discern from the syllabus how this course meets the non-western culture requirement for study of a "contemporary culture" (1 and 5 under General Criteria for Non-western Courses). More explanation is necessary. Action on these proposals deferred until issues are clarified. Carleen Zoni was invited to address the controversy surrounding the NURS 143 Healthy People proposal that is slated for the LSC agenda on 2/14 -Dr. Zoni will not be at the 2/14 meeting when it is scheduled for review. As background for the LSC members, she discussed the history of the proposal from the nursing dept, past and present situation with Health & Wellness seats, major issues raised by the HPED dept, and the resource issue. Memo from Yaw Asamoah tabled until next meeting.
