Slack, C. Young, G Wilson, E. Mannikka, T. Warman R. Rearick, M. Dively, C.Zoni Excused: B. Carter, J. Pickering Minutes from 9/19 approved on a Wilson/Swinker motion. 120 credit mandate: further discussed the implications/feasibility of options. Mary Sadler reported on Academic Council meeting and response to the proposed recommendations. Responded to emails from Academic Council members concerning the 2 proposals that were presented at the 9/23 meeting of Academic Council. Discussed the meeting with Dan Boone and the concerns of the Philosophy department. Discussed two additional ideas that included defining ranges in the Math and LS Elective categories and allowing departments to determine the requirement for those categories: Proposed Recommendation #1 In light of feedback from some members of Academic Council, this option is proposed as blend of previous ideas. English/Research writing 7 cr Fine Arts 3 cr Math 3-6 cr Humanities 9 cr Natural Science 8-10 cr Social Sciences 9 cr Health & wellness 3 cr Synthesis 3 cr Liberal Studies Electives 0-6 cr Total credits in LS program cannot be less 48 credits and may be as high as 50 credits (unless specific programs have the ability and desire to exceed 50 credits in LS courses). Proposed Recommendation - #2 Consider this recommendation an iteration of that proposed by the Philosophy Dept and a response to feedback from AC members: English/Research writing 7 cr Fine Arts 3 cr Math 3-6 cr Humanities 9 cr Natural Science 8-10 cr Social Sciences 9 cr Health & wellness 3 cr Synthesis 3 cr Liberal Studies Electives 0-9 cr Total credits in the Liberal Studies program must be 48 credits minimum, but may be as high as 50 if there is not an option to reduce free electives or other credits in the program. For programs with other options you may choose to maintain the 9 cr of LSE, but then the 4 credits must be reduced from your program (free electives or other options) in order to achieve compliance with the 120 credit maximum). Each department will identify the specific number of credits required for their program in both the Math and LSE categories, so that a range will not appear in the catalog for your program, but rather specific credits required for Math and LSE. It was decided that all three options should be advanced to Senate for information. The proposal allowing for 0-9 cr range of LS Electives was favored since this one best addresses the concerns of the Philosophy department. A one page report to the Senate will be prepared that includes justification for each option. Options will be re-ordered. Supporting documents will be available on the LS web page and will be so noted to Senators. Mary Sadler agreed to send a draft for LSC members to read and critique before advancing to Senate. A revised version of the recommendations will be drafted in response to input from Academic Council. Adjourned at 5 pm.
