Sadler, E. Mannikka, C. Young, F. Slack, M. Dively, G. Wilson, T.Warman, M Swinker, C. Zoni Excused: B. Carter, Ryan Rearick (excused for semester) Meeting called to order at 3:15 p.m. Minutes from December 16 were approved on a Young/Mannikka motion. Discussed feedback on LSC decisions made at the December meeting related to Educational Psychology and Music History courses. Discussed Dr Mary Ann Rafoth’s request for rationale on the decision. A response to her will note the following: citing general criteria that apply to all liberal studies courses, “must be distinguished from technical, professional, or pre-professional courses” and “be distinguished from courses which are designed primarily for the needs of beginning majors and which presume the taking of additional coursework in that discipline” and citing from the Knowledge Area: Social Sciences the defining characteristics of the disciplines included in the Social Sciences. “theories that describe and explain human behavior in a social and cultural context”, and disciplines considered social sciences at бЧЩЋгАПт identified as “anthropology, criminology, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology”, and citing from the criteria for courses in the social science knowledge area, “promote an understanding of individuals, groups and their physical and social environment by exploring and analyzing concepts developed in the discipline” and “discussion of other cultures and subcultures including minorities and the roles of women”. The course content and assignments are clearly designed for education majors and would be less relevant to other majors, e.g., Teaching as a Profession in the course content and a major assignment to write a personal philosophy of teaching (and learning). Beyond that is the issue of resources; if this course is open to any major on campus as are other courses in this category, how can education majors be guaranteed a seat in a given semester since it is identified in the profession course sequence or in some cases the pre-profession sequence. A response to her department will be drafted. The LSC would consider either a revision of the EDSP 102 course to meet the criteria and/or a revision of the LS criteria upon which decisions are made as to what constitutes an LS course. Reviewed COSC 101 Microbased Computer Literacy. There was a request to review the old syllabus of record before deliberating on the changes. Several issues were discussed relative to this course revision as an LS Elective offering: ask proposers to consider updating the course using information literacy competencies as a framework course content is similar to what has been taught in the past; has the time come to change this course to better meet the needs of incoming students? This concern is raised in light of recent events that have caused programs to reassess the requirement for this course. Suggest name change and revisions to objectives Suggest more information on evaluating the credibility of internet sources, plagiarism, web page development, copyright issues Suggest being more explicit about how the contributions of women and minorities is addressed and perhaps include some discussion of international initiatives in the area of computer literacy Reaction papers—what will students be expected to react to? Suggest being more explicit about the inclusion of a non-textbook reading for the book report Projects might be a strategy for addressing LS criteria related to women & minorities What types of digital image software will students use in the course? Will provide proposer with a copy of “Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education”. On a Wilson/Dively motion approved LS changes to the following programs: BA Economics/Mathematics; BS Applied Mathematics; BS Mathematics On a Young/Zoni motion approved LS changes to the following programs: BA Psychology; BA Psychology /Applied Psychology Track On a Zoni/Swinker motion approved LS changes to the following programs: BA Criminology; BA Criminology/Pre-Law Track Reviewed proposal, LBST 499 Heroes, More Than Just a Sandwich from Dr. Chauna Craig and Dr. Alan Temes. The committee feels the topic is fascinating and worthy of academic exploration, but ask the proposers to more fully develop the syllabus. Issues discussed: 1) recommend explaining in more depth #3 and #4 in the synthesis summary on the cover page, 2) explain in more depth how the use of “heroes” and the “holistic health perspective” link or connect as a framework for examining the issues in the course. As written, it is not clear how the holistic health perspective is integrated in the study of heroes, 3) detailed course outline appears to be assignments or learning activities that students will accomplish, so we ask for a more detailed topical outline, 4) evidence of holistic health issues is not addressed in the topical outline –how is it envisioned that students will accomplish goals related to this perspective, 5) needs to be more explicit about the evaluation methods, i.e. how many exams, how is class participation graded, more about the mission statement project, is mission project assignment and class participation equivalent to essay exams (each represents 25% of course grade), 6) suggest using a particular style for bibliography –i.e. APA, MLA , 7) course objectives – “f”. is disciples the intended word or disciplines?, 8) bibliography should include literature from each of the disciplines included in the course. We encourage the proposers to resubmit after addressing the committee issues. Preliminary discussion on the process for revision of the LS curriculum. Discussion will continue at next meeting. Discussed the distribution of the Greater Expectations brochure, “Project Partners with Accreditors on Assessment and Student Achievement” Decided to distribute copies to all academic deans, dept chairs, and curriculum chairs at this time.
