Slack, M. Swinker, T. Warman, M. Dively, E, Mannikka, B. Carter, C. Zoni Guests: Dr. Darlene Richardson, Chair Geoscience; Dr, Mary Lou Zanich, Chair, Psychology Excused: J. Myers, C. Young, G. Wilson Minutes from 4/17/03 meeting approved on a Mannikka/Warman motion. On a Carter/Dively motion the BS Business/Pre-Law Track was NOT approved for the following reasons: concern that the majors’ courses were reduced from 27 cr. to 20 cr.; this is a variance from the other pre-law tracks concerns about the design of the degree program including the paragraph describing the track; these concerns will be advanced to the UWUCC. Recommend redesigning this entire track to be consistent with the other pre-law tracks; suggest that the proposer work with the pre-law coordinator, Dr Gwen Torges and the Dean College of Humanities and Social Sciences to create a program for students in the College of Business that can be completed in 120 credits. On a Warman/ Swinker motion approved ARHI 425 Arts of China for the Liberal Studies Elective and Non-western categories. Will ask the proposer to clarify whether it is appropriate for non-majors to take this course without any prerequisite knowledge. On a Dively/Zoni motion approved ARHI 426 Arts of Japan for the Liberal Studies elective and non-western categories. On a Warman/ Swinker motion approved ARHI 425 Arts of China and Dr. Penny Rode for Type III writing approval. On a Dively/Zoni motion approved ARHI 426 Arts of Japan and Dr. Penny Rode for Type III writing approval. Dr. Darlene Richardson and Dr. Mary Lou Zanich were invited to attend the LSC to provide a brief explanation of the position taken by all Chairs in the College of Natural Science & Mathematics regarding the request made by the Dept of Music for a variance on the number of natural science credits required for Music education majors. The request to reduce Option II credits from 10 to 7 is opposed by the College chairs. Other solutions were offered to resolve the dilemma. On a Swinker/Zoni motion, a reduction in Natural Science credits to 7 cr. for Music Education majors was not recommended (yes- 7; no- 0; abs-0). Solutions to the problem were discussed at length. The following suggestion was unanimously supported by the group and will be discussed with the Music and English departments prior to the UWUCC meeting. Provisional approval for the following recommendation for the BS Education –Music Education program was given provided both departments support the recommendation. 1) Allow MUHI 102 Survey of Music Literature to substitute for ENGL 121 Humanities Literature for the 03-04 academic year while the two departments work continue the work that has been started on this option. 2) Consider the Fine Arts category fulfilled by courses in the major 3) Recommend Option II in Natural Sciences, one lab, and two non –labs (PHYS 105 as one of these) and the second non-lab counts for LSE 4) total LS credits remain at 50 On a Swinker/Mannikka motion approved the BS Education-Business Education with the following editorials: 1) eliminate words Controlled electives for each of the concentrations; 2) change free electives from 4 cr to 0 Electives; 3) eliminate the line referring to Other Requirements as 0. On a Swinker/Zoni motion approved BS Clinical Laboratory Sciences (formerly BS Medical Technology). Prefix change is not being honored at this time so prefixes will remain MEDT. On a Slack/Zoni motion approved the BS Natural Science program LS changes. On a Zoni/Swinker motion approved LS changes to the following programs: BS Natural Science/Pre-Chiropractic Track; Pre-Dentistry Track; Pre-Optometry Track; Pre-Pharmacy Track; Pre-Physical Therapy Track; Pre-Podiatry Track with a recommendation to change free electives in each program from 0-30 to 24-30cr. On a Swinker/Mannikka motion approved the BS Education- Social Science Education/Sociology Concentration with the recommendations to: 1) specify 6 cr LS Electives; 2) format for Natural Science: BIOL103-104 (recommended). 3) provide evidence that Geography and Political Science depts were notified of changes to LS Electives. On a Zoni/Swinker motion approved BA Spanish for International Trade with the following recommendations: 1) correct the order of prefixes with BTED/COSC/ IFMG 101, 2) specify 6 cr of LS Electives, 3) Span 404 add “Spanish” to the title, 4) correct course number for MGMT 311, 5) notify Geography department of dropping GEOG 252, 6) add changes to the proposal – reduction in LS electives and changes in the courses specified. On a Mannikka/Swinker motion approved FDNT 362 Experimental Foods and Dr. Mia Barker for Type III writing approval. A suggestion will be advanced to Dr. Barker that the syllabus reflect her activities related to individual conferencing with students about their writing. On a Mannikka/Zoni motion provisionally approved the course revision for BTED/COSC/IFMG 101 for the LS elective category with the following recommendations: 1) review the checklist because it appears that some categories should be checked as “Primary” and #3 is not checked at all, 2) Page 4 was missing from the proposal, 3) on the checklist, identify how aesthetics are reflected in the course. On a Slack/Mannikka motion approved THRT 310Theater Criticism for Type II departmental course writing approval. Discussed the SCI 281 Special Topics: Chemistry for Society course; the department was requesting one time approval to teach in the Spring 04 for non-lab science credit. Some issues need clarified: 1) course description refers to liberal arts majors; is the intent to say non-science majors? Suggest some minor editing of course description 2) would like to see course objectives, 3) seems like there may be some overlap with other departments; 4) will there be a no-textbook reading; 5) evaluation methods rely solely on exams –the content lends itself to some interesting projects that would reinforce the application of science to the home environment. Returned to the proposer for re-submission once these issues are addressed. Discussed the logistics of handling the course substitutions for HIST 281, the experimental section that will substitute for HIST 195 for the 03-04 academic year. It was felt that one letter could be advanced to the respective Dean’s office naming all the students for whom this course would substitute for HIST 195; and then individual letters for each students file sent to their respective department. Mary Sadler will again confer with Rich DiStanislao about how to efficiently handle this large number of exceptions. The issue of Banner recognizing Junior Status for Business majors is another concern that needs to be addressed.
