Sadler, B. Carter, M. Swinker, F. Slack, C. Young, G. Wilson, C. Zoni, E. Mannikka, T. Warman, R. Rearick Excused: J. Pickering, M. Dively New members Tara Warman and Ryan Rearick were welcomed and introduced Minutes from 5/9 were approved Accepted the final version of the LSC position statement related to the 120 credit mandate The Liberal Studies Committee supports the integrity of the current Liberal Studies core requirements at ɫӰ as essential to a liberal education for baccalaureate students. In addition, a comprehensive survey conducted in 2000 of ɫӰ faculty, administrators, student s and alumni showed strong support for the current program. We agree unanimously that any revisions to the ɫӰ core, made to the SSHE Board of Governors mandate for a 120-credit requirement, must include an effective dialogue about educational objectives. While the current financial constraints are severe, ɫӰ should not seek potential savings at the expense of sound academic reasoning. In that regard, the Liberal Studies Committee, as a Senate curriculum committee, seeks an active role in creative problem solving with ɫӰ Administration if an changes to the Liberal Studies program are envisioned as a response to the 120-credit mandate. Affirmed and discussed the charge from the APC to the Liberal Studies Committee to review the LS program in light of the Board of Governors 120-credit mandate and make a recommendation to the UWUCC. The recommendation to the UWUCC should be made in time for their 10/8 meeting, so that it could advance to Senate in November. Discussed and agreed upon a process for undertaking this task. Decided that broad support is necessary and input from faculty vital. Developed the following plan: A. Send a memo to all departments asking for a response to the following question by Sept. 5th: If the 4 credit reduction is to come from the LS package of courses, where should the changes be made? If the 4 credit reduction comes from the LS package of courses, what are your major concerns? B. Brainstorming session on strategies for responding to the 120-mandate (9/5 committee members) C. Respond to input from departments and feasible ideas from brainstorming session (9/5, 12, 19) D. Communicate draft recommendation to APC as part of the review process (prior to 10/3) E. Forward recommendation to UWUCC (by Oct 4th Oct 8th meeting). Distributed a document prepared by the English department that identifies their concerns about possible cuts to ENGL 101 and ENGL 202. Dean Carter, on behalf of the dept, addressed the curricular and resource implications of a decision to reduce either credits or eliminate these courses. Distributed a for information a draft document of guidelines established for exceptions to the 120 rule. Discussed ideas related to reducing the LS package: Eliminating from the LS Elective category Allowing an option to select form one of two categories (i.e. Math, Phil) Allowing departments to decide on their own how they reduce by 4 credits Adjourned at 5:00 pm. ?AEF 0 I 5CJ\CJH*CJ"2OP78WXEFE F / 0 W r ^ & F$a$I @Au23I 1h/ =!"#$% !"#$%&'()*+, F'Microsoft Office Word 97-2003 Document MSWordDocWord.Document.89q ]8O8m008@H DAV:getcontentlanguageen-usOh+'0 0Lx i8@8 NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH 22 Heading 1$@&5\<A@< Default Paragraph Font,B@, Body Text5\.P@.
