Sadler, B.G. Wilson, M. Collins, F. Slack, C. Young, S. Deutschlander, C. Zoni, J. Myers Excused: B. Blackledge, A. Stenta (for semester), E. Mannikka (for semester) Minutes from 9/2 approved on a Wilson/Deutschlander motion with minor editorials. On a Wilson/Young motion approved Dr. David Smith Computer Science to teach Can Machines Think? for the Spring 05 semester. On a Wilson/Zoni motion provisional approval for MUHI 301 Music History I as a Type II department writing course. The approval is contingent upon the following recommendations for revision: 1) check that course objectives are the Senate approved objectives, 2) attendance policy should be revised to state 3 hours of unexcused absence without penalty, 3) the grading criteria was not clear (and this is the case for the MUHI 302 course as well) the 10-point grading scale and the wholistic rubric do not make it clear to students how they will be evaluated on the assignments, 4) the course outline should be for a 14 week semester and a final exam week, 5) typographical error on the assigned reading – is it HWM or HVM?, 6) recommend deleting the phrase on page 10, “in order to make this as painless a project as possible”. Approval will be reported to UWUCC pending receipt of revisions. Discussed the Type I request from Kareem Jordan and the CRIM 400 proposal that was submitted with the request. There was a question as to whether he attended an бЧЩЋгАПт Writing Workshop – this will be clarified. There were a number of issues discussed related to the use of the existing Type II writing course for granting a Type I approval. On a Myers/Young motion Type I approval was denied. According to the Liberal Studies criteria for writing across the curriculum, Kareem Jordan may teach CRIM 400 as a /w/ course, but he must use the CRIM 400 syllabus that was approved by the LSC in November 2002. This includes using the Senate approved course description and objectives for CRIM 400, and according to the 2004 undergraduate catalog, there are no prerequisites for CRIM 400 and prerequisites cannot be added without doing a course revision. If Mr. Jordan decides to submit another proposal for Type I approval, then the following suggestions are offered: 1) use the Senate approved course description and objectives for the course that is submitted and it should be a course that does not already have Type II approval , 2) the writing summary should offer more explanation about the types of writing used and how the writing assignments help students learn the material and become more skillful writers, 3) discrepancies were noted in the number of pages required for the Theory-Research paper – 9-11 pages on the Summary chart and in the description of the paper on page 5 the requirement notes 6-8 pages, 4) the grading criteria was not clear and therefore may be confusing to students – the wholistic rubric and then points for each assignment, i.e., for an “A” paper, how many points does a student earn? Is there a range that distinguishes a high “A” from a low “A”? and 5) is the course outline based on a 14 week semester and final exam week? Discussed the Type I request from Dr J. Beth Mabry, Sociology SOC 357 Sociology of Aging. On a Young/Zoni motion provisionally approved the Type I status pending verification that 1) this is the approved syllabus of record, 2) needs to include the approved course description and objectives, 3) attendance policy is somewhat misleading in that is states the “university permits only one week of unexcused absence”; suggest that the faculty take ownership of the policy that is to be enforced and that it be in compliance with the guidelines set by the university, 4) topical outline should be for 14 weeks and a final exam week, and 5) editorial – questioned the author identified for Like Water for Chocolate – (Laura Esquivel rather than Isabella Allende?). Approval will be reported to UWUCC pending receipt of revisions. Discussed HDES program revision for Child Development and Family Relations. The following recommendations are offered: 1) eliminate the MATH 101 or higher phrase unless there is a specific reason for including, 2) eliminate the Natural Science line since students are free to take either option, 3) using the minimum number of credits required for LS, changes the 51 to 50 credits (if students choose Nat Sci Option II), thereby increasing Free Electives to 29-30. On a Collins/Deutschlander motion, the LS portion of the Child Development and Family Relations program is approved providing the suggested revisions are made.
