Barnacle, F. Slack, T. Wacker J. Myers, B.G. Wilson, Y. Asamoah, M. Swinker, C. Young Excused: S. Deutschlander and N. Austin (excused for the semester); C. Zoni Minutes from 11-3-05 meeting were approved on a Wilson/Wacker motion. Reviewed the LS component of the BA Interdisciplinary Fine Arts Dance Arts Track program revision proposal. On a Swinker/Barnacle motion approved the change to the LS section of the proposal. Also noted that there may need to be some revision in the number of free electives if the credits are to add up to 120 (free electives 17-25). It was recommended that the department be asked whether there are some credits stipulations in categories that would make the 20-21 credits correct. Will forward the information to the UWUCC. Reviewed a revised Type I proposal submitted by Dr. Stan Mukasa. The committee offers the following suggestions for revision: 1) use consistent language when referring to the research paper – referred to as an essay, research paper, and term paper in different places in the syllabus, 2) under “Writing for Evaluation”- the 3 web-based exams are not considered a way to foster writing skills since they are a multiple choice and fill in the blanks format. Therefore, reference to these exams should be deleted from this section of the proposal. 3) the section under “Writing to Enhance Reading” - if there are writing assignments associated with the readings, they should be referenced, 4) referring to the Summary of Writing Chart - it is not clear in the proposal how the Talking Points assignment is revised by students; the WebCT quizzes should not be included here because they do not represent a written assignment; clarify a discrepancy in the percentage of grade for the Videos assignment [20% on the Summary Chart and 10% in the Evaluations Section] and Community Events is listed on the Summary Chart, but is not a course requirement so it should not be included, 5) it may be helpful to students to more clearly identify the process by which you expect the research papers to be completed, i.e. dates for submission, feedback from faculty, return to student, resubmission of revised work; revision is mentioned during the final exam week in the syllabus –the committee was concerned that this was taking place so late in the semester 6) under the Instructions for the Term Paper section, you may wish to clarify the number of books and articles expected since this seemed unclear to the committee , 7) we were unable to find the log and grade sheet in the proposal, 8) suggest revising the plagiarism item as it requires some additional clarification –especially what constitutes plagiarism and also how sources such as EBSCO and on-line newspapers should be handled, 9) students may be confused about the terms focus and thesis, since they appear to be used as synonyms in the instructions, 10) it is not clear if and how the faculty is providing feedback on writing to students –refer to #19 under Instructions for Term Paper. The Criteria for Writing Intensive states, “provide ample opportunities for students to improve their writing skills and to have at least 5000 words [15-20 typed pages] comprising two or more assignments evaluated by an instructor (Liberal Studies Information Packet, pg 14), 11) you may wish to clarify for students how written assignments are graded, i.e. how do they achieve the maximum points allotted, and 12) the catalog description on page 1/5 needs to be identical to the one published in the UWUCC catalog and are the course objectives the original ones that were approved by Senate or have they been revised? Action on the Type I request was deferred until the proposer has an opportunity to address the recommendations and submit a revised proposal. Discussed a student being able to register for sections of HPED/NURS/FDNT 143 after having successfully completing the requirement, and the issue of students wanting to register for LBST 499 more than once. Concerning HPED/NURS/FDNT 143, the courses from the three departments are considered equivalent and therefore a student should not be permitted to take more than one for credit towards graduation requirements. The situation of not allowing students to take a second LBST 499 section after successfully completing one has to do primarily with resources – there are not enough seats available to allow students to repeat this requirement.
