Sadler, J. Coccarelli, P. Barnacle, F. Slack, T. Wacker C. Zoni, B.G. Wilson, Y. Asamoah, M. Swinker, C. Young Excused: S. Deutschlander and N. Austin (excused for the semester); J. Myers Minutes from 11-17-05 meeting were approved on a Wilson/Wacker motion. Reviewed a revised Type I proposal submitted by Dr. Stan Mukasa. The committee reviewed the proposal in light of the recommendations made at the November 17th meeting that were forwarded to Dr. Mukasa by email. The revised proposal adequately addressed a number of the recommendations, but it remains unclear to the committee where or how the following recommendations are addressed - recommendations are identified by the number assigned to the item in the Nov 17 minutes: 3) the section under “Writing to Enhance Reading” - if there are writing assignments associated with the readings, they should be referenced, 5) it may be helpful to students to more clearly identify the process by which you expect the research papers to be completed, i.e. dates for submission, feedback from faculty, return to student, resubmission of revised work; revision is mentioned during the final exam week in the syllabus –the committee was concerned that this was taking place so late in the semester 6) under the Instructions for the Term Paper section, you may wish to clarify the number of books and articles expected since this seemed unclear to the committee (syllabus states: “Use at least 5 books including at least 5 articles”) 7) we were unable to find the log and grade sheet in the proposal, 8) suggest revising the plagiarism item as it requires some additional clarification –especially what constitutes plagiarism and also how sources such as EBSCO and on-line newspapers should be handled, (there was specific concern about the sentence: “If you must copy from a source let it not be substantial and acknowledge the source”) 10) the process and timing throughout the semester for faculty feedback on writing to students is not clear –refer to #17 under Instructions for Term Paper. The Criteria for Writing Intensive states, “provide ample opportunities for students to improve their writing skills and to have at least 5000 words [15-20 typed pages] comprising two or more assignments evaluated by an instructor (Liberal Studies Information Packet, pg 14), 11) you may wish to clarify for students how written assignments are graded, i.e. how do they achieve the maximum points allotted, and 12) the catalog description on page 1of 5 needs to be identical to the one published in the UWUCC catalog and are the course objectives the original ones that were approved by Senate or have they been revised? In addition, the following concerns were discussed: 1) committee would like to review a copy of the official syllabus of record to determine what the senate approved catalog description and objectives are, 2) a switch between British and American English are found in different places, 3) under writing for evaluation and additional readings, check the authors’ names for accuracy (order of first and last names), dates of publication and edition number if the book is a re-print, 4) in #18 of the instructions, it is the Writing Center that offers writing workshops rather than the Learning Center, 5) overall concern that you may be disappointed in the results of the term paper that students produce given the instructions provided to them in the syllabus. The Type I request was denied on a Swinker/Wacker motion. The committee recognizes that PNAF 131 is a course that was not originally developed by Dr. Mukasa, nor does he teach it on a regular basis; perhaps it was not the best choice to use for a Type I request. The committee invites Dr. Mukasa to resubmit a proposal that a) addresses the recommendations for PNAF 131 and consider requesting a Type III status, or b) submit a Journalism course that he teaches on a regular basis. Pending a minor clarification and UWUCC approval, on a Wilson/Zoni motion approved GEOS 225 Forensic Geology for both the Non-lab Science and Liberal Studies Elective categories. Work on a Mission Statement was tabled until next semester. Adjourned at 4:25 pm on a Young/Asamoah motion. Note: On a Wacker/Swinker motion, these minutes from 12/1/05 were approved by electronic ballot on 12/5/05. *4<>abc’“ІЇЎЏАЛМНШЩденєљ !
