Sadler, J. Coccarelli, P. Barnacle, C. Zoni, C. Young, N. Austin, F. Slack, Y. Asamoah , J. Myers, M. Swinker (semester substitute for S. Deutschlander) Excused: S. Deutschlander (excused for the semester), B.G. Wilson Guests: Dr. J.B. Smith Minutes from 4-21-05 were approved with editorial corrections on a Zoni/Barnacle motion with Swinker abstaining. Welcomed new member, Terri Wacker from the Music department and Mary Swinker who will serve as a one semester substitute for Sharon Deutschlander. Discussed the Type I proposal submitted by J.B. Smith. Dr Smith was present to address questions. The following issues were raised and/or questioned: 1) this particular course, a practical professional development course, does not require the types of writing that are typically seen in writing intensive courses and therefore may not be the best type of course to showcase for a Type I request –may be better suited for a Type III request; 2) the philosophy paper is described as a personal or professional philosophy –it would help to clarify to students which type of philosophy statement is expected. This paper does not appear on the summary chart for writing assignments; 3) the amount of student writing for the review of graduate schools since the first page is information about the school, program etc. This part of the assignment would not entail any student writing. There was also a concern about this assignment being worth 20% of the grade; 4) the statement in the first paragraph that states” the purpose…..is to teach students to synthesize current professional research pertaining to ….” This statement does not seem to accurately describe the course proposal; 5) the proposal should clearly identify how revision and feedback is accomplished. The summary chart indicates that 3 assignments include a revision process but the syllabus does not identify or describe the revision process, for example, there are no directions for students on submitting, revising and re-submitting; 6) rubrics or a set of evaluation criteria for grading the writing assignments is recommended; 7) the set of instructions for selecting a person for the mock interview and professional interviews seemed contradictory – the 10 mile radius seems burdensome for students; 8) whether using class time for internet searching of graduate programs is an efficient or effective use of faculty and student time in a writing intensive course; 9) the 10 questions that students are asking professionals in the field should be proofread, edited and revised – some typos and grammatical errors; in addition to transcribing the interview, how are students using these interviews to “examine attitudes and opinions of professionals in the field”?; 10) course description and objectives have information literacy as an emphasis in the course, yet it is not obvious in the course proposal the type of information literacy skills that will be fostered; 11) course outline B. identifies scholarly writing in the HPED discipline and background/analysis of the research writing process for 3 hours of the course. The committee questioned whether talking about scholarly writing and writing conventions help students gain skill in this area; 12) it is not clear from the proposal how the web page development fosters specific information literacy skills as opposed to specific computer skills; 13) disciplinary scholarship is not apparent in the bibliography; 14) the committee feels that reviewing the HPED 442 course packet would be helpful in understanding the assignments and course expectations for writing goals and activities. Dr. Smith graciously thanked the committee for constructive feedback and agreed to provide the additional materials. Reviewed LBST 499 Can Machines Think?, a revision proposal submitted by Mr. David Smith, Computer Science dept. The following issues were addressed: 1) a set of behavioral course objectives, 2) proposal pagination, 3) editing before distributing to students. The committee invites Mr. Smith to attend the next LSC meeting. Sadler reported that she authorized a one time approval for Ms. Sara Rutledge to teach LBST 499 Childhood in America for the fall 05 semester. Reviewed the request from Dr. Michael Vella to turn over the responsibility for teaching LBST 499 proposal Blues in American Culture to Dr. Robert Begg, Geography & Regional Planning dept. Dr. Vella agreed to provide Dr. Begg with his teaching materials. Since Dr. Begg cannot attend the LSC meeting because of a class conflict, the committee asks that he provide them with a response to the 10 most frequently asked synthesis questions.
