Sadler, J. Coccarelli, P. Barnacle, C. Zoni, C. Young, N. Austin, F. Slack, Y. Asamoah, J. Myers, M. Swinker, B.G. Wilson, T. Wacker Excused: S. Deutschlander (excused for the semester) Guests: Dr. G. Bahgat; Mr. David Smith Minutes from 9-1-05 meeting were approved with editorial corrections on a Zoni/Coccarelli motion with Wilson abstaining. Sadler discussed the need for a mission statement for general education. Drs. Zoni, Myers and Young agreed to draft a mission statement for consideration. The mission statement should accompany the Student Learning Outcomes as a package through the approval process. Asamoah agreed to meet with Dr. M.A. Rafoth and facilitate the submission of a report from the Student Learning Outcomes workgroup. The LS revision timeline calls for these items to be presented to Senate for discussion and action this semester. Sadler reported that the Liberal Studies Program is scheduled for a 5 year review during the 05-06 AY. There was consensus that the report should reflect the data generated and analyzed during the Middle States Self Study work that was conducted during the 04-05 AY. Sadler reported that Dr. N. Kolb has waived the requirement for an external consultant in light of the Middle States site visit in the spring. Prior to submission, committee members will be asked to respond to a draft of the program review report. The committee reviewed the additional course materials for HPED 442 submitted by Dr. J.B. Smith. On an Asamoah/Barnacle motion, the request for writing status was rejected based on the following rationale: 1) the course, while perhaps practical for entry into the workforce, does not require the types of writing that are typically seen in writing intensive courses and therefore may not be the best type of course to showcase a writing request, 2) fails to meet the criteria for writing-intensive courses as noted in the Liberal Studies Information Packet, i.e., assignments that “guide students in conceiving, organizing, and presenting written material in ways appropriate to the subject being studied”, “at least one assignment that requires…finished, edited prose”, and course should “give attention to both the process and product of writing”, and 3) writing assignments do not reflect professional writing in the field of HPED; they lack rigor, and do not reflect student discourse. Dr. Gawdat Bahgat presented his synthesis proposals, International Terrorism, The Political Economy of Energy, and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction. The committee agrees that the proposals have merit and offers the following comments and suggestions for revision, 1) design course material and assignments to appeal to a broader audience with opportunities for students to apply the new knowledge to their disciplinary perspective, challenge assumptions, explore areas of interest, or explore how this knowledge fits with their own world view, 2) question whether stating that the course “introduces students” is accurate, 3) using UWUCC format include a set of behavioral objectives that show a connection with the paragraphs describing the course, the content, assignments, and evaluation methods, (examples of behavioral objectives are located in the UWUCC handbook, 4) required readings seem daunting; perhaps assigning particular readings to individual or small groups of students and expecting students to share key points, questions, and insights with the larger class would make the reading feasible and would help to connect the readings to the class content, 5) the amount of reading might result in a superficial understanding rather than the depth of understanding that could result from this course, 6) the uniqueness of each course could be enhanced by creating unique assignments and evaluation methods as appropriate for the content and course objectives, 7) questioned whether a mid term and final exam that account for 70% of the total grade are the best ways to evaluate student achievement of course goals, 8) consider course titles that will attract a broad cross section of majors, 9) suggest perusing the assignments in the sample syllabus in the Liberal Studies Information Packet with a caution that the objectives in this sample fail to meet the standard of behavioral objectives. As Dr. Bahgat discussed the proposals and his typical teaching methods, the committee felt confident that synthetic thinking will be fostered, but asks that the process for this be more apparent in the written proposals and course syllabi. We suggest revising one proposal at a time beginning with the one that is likely to be offered first. Mr. David Smith, Computer Science department, presented his revised proposal for LBST 499 Can Machines Think? The proposal was approved on a Wilson/Wacker motion. Approved Ms. Leigh Ann Morgan to teach a section of LBST 499 Food & Culture for the fall 05 semester. Adjourned on a Swinker/Coccarelli motion at 5:15 pm. *5=?c”•žŸВШоыі , .
