Sadler, K. McKee, G. Wilson, Y. Asamoah, F. Slack, C. Zoni, J. Coccarelli, T. Wacker Excused: M. Hughes, P. Barnacle Minutes from 2/8 and 2/15 were reviewed and approved on a Zoni/Coccarelli motion. On a Wilson/McKee motion, provisional approval was given to allow students who enroll in the course CHSS 281 The World You Inherit: Power, Privilege and Purpose in the Modern Human Experience during the 07-08 AY to count it as a Liberal Studies Elective by completing a Petition for Exception to an LS Requirement form. This motion was with the following recommendations: 1) when preparing the syllabus for students, use the UWUCC format that will include course outcomes and credits, 2) consider that 3 versions of the syllabus will be necessary since each group will have a different time schedule for the topical outline, 3) consider that students should not have to switch classrooms every 4 weeks, but rather the faculty should move to where the students are as the faculty changes every 4 weeks, 4) merge the syllabus so that it appears as a cohesive whole rather than 3 separate courses. The committee reviewed Dr. Ryan-Sams’ response to committee questions about LBST 499 The Caribbean: Beyond the Beach. On a Zoni/Wacker motion, the proposal was provisionally approved with the following recommendations: 1) chart on page 2 - make note that 4 of the possible topics for response papers fall in the first half of the class – is this intentional?, 2) to eliminate the words “try to” when referring to the expectation for thinking skills to be used for the response papers, 3) suspect a minor typo in rubric 4th row, 4th column - should it be “there” instead of here?, 4) course outcomes – suggest making more succinct by eliminating most of the parenthetical comments, and consider perhaps that the word familiarity might be replaced with “knowledge of” for outcome #4 5) evaluation methods – in reference to the statement “failure to turn in this essay will result in a failing grade for the course”, the paper is worth 40% of the grade, therefore hypothetically, a student could receive full credit on all the other assignments and not complete the final paper and finish with a 60% for the course. Your grading scale indicates that 60% is passing. To eliminate any gray area that may be subject to a grade appeal, it is suggested that you count the final synthetic essay as 45% of the course grade, or change your grading scale so that 60% is a failing grade rather than a “D”, 6) day 14 in the topical outline generated questions because of the formatting – are you planning for class and the mid-term evaluation this day?, and 7) attendance policy – for clarity you may wish to specify that for every hour of “unexcused absence” beyond the allotted three….; and a minor typo appears in the last sentence – excused rather than excuse. The committee reviewed a proposal from Dr. Charles Kanyarusoke, LBST 499 Development Communication. The committee will invite him to attend the next LSC meeting on March 1 to discuss 1) the title, 2) the attendance policy, and 3) the strategies that are anticipated for assigning students to the “expert” roles. No action was taken. Liberal Studies Revision Steering Committee update; Sadler distributed, for discussion, the latest documents from the revision project and accepted suggestions for revision. The documents that are advanced for the LSRSC on-line meeting will reflect the LSC suggestions.
