Williamson, Dawn Woodland, Nashat Zuraikat EXCUSED: Susan Boser, Mark Staszkiewicz, Wenfan Yen Dr. Michael T. Williamson called the meeting to order at 3:25 p.m. On a Piper/Dandeneau motion, Dr. David LaPorte was nominated to serve as chair. LaPorte was elected by a unanimous vote. On a Lenze/Dandeneau motion the agenda was APPROVED as submitted. On a Piper/Brown motion the April 25, 2006 minutes were APPROVED as submitted. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dr. LaPorte announced the charge of the committee as indicated in the ɫӰ Senate By-Laws. He explained to the committee that their primary role is to evaluate curriculum proposals, policies and procedures pertinent to graduate education. While it is the responsibility of all members to read all documents distributed at the meetings, the primary review of assigned committee work is the responsibility of the sub-committees. Also, Dr. LaPorte shared that in the past committee members have removed themselves from deliberations on proposals dealing with their respective departments. He welcomed Dean Eck as Interim Dean of School of Graduates Studies and Research; also he acknowledged Susan Boser, who is out of the country, as Deans Associate. Dr. LaPorte passed out the subcommittee lists. Dr. LaPorte announced that last year there was a desire to create a Graduate Academic Committee that would take the non circular matters from the Graduate Committee; Rules Committee, Academic Affairs Committee and this committee was in favor of forming the Graduate Academic Committee; but there are not enough people to man a new committee at this time. David asked if for at least a year the Graduate Committee would like to continue taking non circular as well as circular matters; the committee agreed to keep as is. Dr. LaPorte touched on the search for the Vice Provost; he said that the Provost assured that there will be someone hired for this position. Dr. LaPorte talked about a preliminary proposal for a new M.S. degree program in Critical Asset Protection Sciences (CAPS) that Jim Lenze, Michael T. Williamson, and he looked at this summer. They reviewed this preliminary proposal and provided feedback; it is likely we will see it again at some point but there were fairly substantial recommendations made that they need to do. Dr. LaPorte talked about some concerns of the Academic Integrity Policy; he is to send some information about this to the committee for all to look over for future discussion. The following proposals were distributed: Ph.D. in Nursing New Course: EDSP 623 Educational Programming for Gifted Learners Graduate Distance Education Review Form: EDSP 623 Educational Programming for Gifted Learners Master Sport Science Minor Program Revision Dr. Williamson shared a poem on reading BUONAPARTES Abdication of the Throne, and his proposed Retreat to the Island of ELBA. J.M.E. The Gentlemans Magazine, LXXXIV (April, 1814), p. 376. Little Nap Horner Is up in a corner, Dreading his doleful doom;- He who gave, tother day, Whole kingdoms away, Now is glad to get Elba Room. On that note he had no other announcements. Dr. Eck announced that he is looking forward to working with the committee and to promoting graduate education.
