Q? ? y| aãF Q0" j"$"` r?  \j M ww5   $  Senate Committee of Student Affairs Minutes November 14, 2006 The following committee members were present: Ray Beisel, Frank (Pete) Brooks, Tracey Cekada, Yong S. Colen, Jamie Coccarelli (student), James Collins (student), Reena Dube, Linda Hall, Dennis Hulings, Rhonda Luckey, Heather Powers, Sue Rieg, Kwasi Yirenkyi. The following committee members were excused: Gina Antonucci (student), Deena Kelly, Vanessa Varacalli (student), Heide Witthoeft. The following committee members were absent: Terry Appolonia, Shree Shyla Aradhya (student), Jonathon Frank (student), Lisa Haffely (student). The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Beisel at 3:33 p.m. New Business Chairperson Beisel introduced Dr. Mary Sadler who discussed the Liberal Studies revisions. She explained the evolution of the process thus far and discussed the linkage between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. The committees collaborated to develop and conduct a survey of students; and both committees embraced the Student Learning Outcomes that were approved by the Senate. Dr. Sadler mentioned that the Liberal Studies Committee is working on the creation of a First Year Experience model, Residential/Community Life, and Service Learning and believed that Student Affairs could be part of this process. She mentioned there will be faculty workshops for the development of First Year Experience Courses. The goal is to build intense connections for students between their major, liberal studies, and everyday lives. Information about the revisions and a timeline can be found at ww.iup.edu/liberal. Old Business The minutes of the October 17th meeting were approved as amended. Chairperson Beisel asked for feedback on the Policy for Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control. He will share the feedback with Malinda Cowles. Chairs Report Dr. Beisel asked the committee to consider the possibility of sports programs being added at the Punxsutawney campus. He shared the NJCAA web site with the committee. The committee will invite Dr. Valerie Trimarchi to address our group and explain what is currently being offered at the Punxsutawney campus and what is being planned for the future. Student Government Report Ms. Jamie Coccarelli reported the following: The Student Government is working on a two year strategic plan Patrick Barnacle recently attended the Leadership Conference at Lock Haven University The next Speak Up ɫӰ will be held on November 20th. The topic will be housing and dining at ɫӰ. Committee member Dr. Hall asked the Student Government Association to reconsider their current policy on membership to Senate committees. She asked that any student appointed by the SGA could participate on committees, not just those who were elected to SGA. Ms. Coccarelli will take the suggestion back to SGA. Senate Committee on Student Affairs Page 2 November 14, 2006 Vice Presidents Report Dr. Luckey announced the following: The Developmental Studies Department will become part of the College of Education and Educational Technology beginning with the Spring 2007 semester. She is asking J.B. Smith, Senate Chair, to identify at least one Senator to serve on a group to identify a new Freshmen Reader for next year. The table talks held on November 13th were very successful. On March 21st Eric Schlosser will be on campus to sign books. Sadly, several ɫӰ students have passed away recently. Dr. Luckey asked us to be aware of students who are in crises and dont know where to turn. She asked that we reach out to these students, especially during the holiday season. Chairperson Beisel announced that Mark Anthony will be at our December meeting to address Service Learning.
