Instructional Development An important goal for the Provost was to make available to all University faculty the specialized course development assistance previously provided only to those who taught through the External Studies Program. CIDDE's instructional development function addresses this objective. At any given time, CIDDE staff are likely to be assisting several dozen faculty members on the design of new courses or the revision of existing ones. Faculty work with CIDDE throughout the year and a growing number is taking advantage of the HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/fds/sidi/" Summer Instructional Development Institute to work individually with instructional designers in a more intensive time frame. CIDDE's integrated course development capabilities enable faculty to call upon a wide range of staff competencies in order to meet their instructional development goals. CIDDE works closely with the Provost's HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Efacaffs/acie/" \t "_blank" Advisory Council on Instructional Excellence (ACIE) to support instructional innovation. This Council administers the Innovation in Education faculty grants program, which provides funding for meritorious instructional projects. Instructional technology has become an integral part of teaching and learning at Pitt. The adoption of the HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/cw/" Blackboard course management system in 1998 enabled Pitt faculty to develop richer Web-enhanced instruction and achieve greater levels of communication in their courses. Other new technologies, such as HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/janus/" Janus and HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/tegrity/" Tegrity, are continually being assessed and adapted to meet instructional needs of the University. Traditional technologies, such as video and audio, continue to play a major role in course development, and CIDDE enables faculty to use a wide variety of formats for these media. One video produced by CIDDE, Navigating the Sea of Information, has been distributed to hundreds of users nationwide. Increasingly, faculty are using multimedia to enable them to integrate the presentation modes most appropriate for the goals and content of their courses. In the area of distance education, CIDDE has continued a course development commitment to the College of General Studies that helps to maintain a HYPERLINK "http://www.solutions.pitt.edu/" \t "_blank" PittOnline Program distance education option for nontraditional undergraduate students. CIDDE staff have assisted with the design and the delivery of other distance learning courses and programs, including programs in the Schools of Information Science, Nursing, Public and International Affairs, Social Work, and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. CIDDE has become a valued partner to faculty seeking both internal and external funding for instructional development projects. Each year, CIDDE works with applicants to the Provost's Innovation in Education grants program and with some of the grant recipients. Faculty preparing educational proposals for external funding often include collaboration with CIDDE. Staff have collaborated in projects funded by Bell Atlantic, State of Pennsylvania Office of Information Technology, State of Pennsylvania Link to Learn Initiative, the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control, PA Department of Health, National Institutes of Health, InterAmerican Development Bank and others. Instructional development includes activities related to assessing the effectiveness of instruction as well as developing it. At the request of the College of Arts & Sciences, instructional designers at CIDDE developed peer teaching review materials to help faculty provide useful feedback to their colleagues on classroom teaching (which you can link to if you are connected to the Internet). CIDDE works collaboratively with the Office of Measurement and Evaluation of Teaching to provide faculty with a range of test design and evaluation services. Faculty Development Faculty development at the University is a shared activity. For example, individual schools and departments provide peer review and mentoring opportunities. CIDDE focuses on providing learning opportunities for faculty related specifically to their teaching role. Similar opportunities are made available to graduate students who serve as teaching assistants or teaching fellows. Faculty development within CIDDE has a central focus, the development of instruction, and a central goal, to increase active learning. Organizing faculty development activity around these strategic themes has led to significant outcomes: The University's HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/fds/fs_nfo.htm" New Faculty Orientation provides information about instructional support resources. Participation has increased from a few dozen to over 100 new faculty from all schools within the University and feedback from those attending has been positive. Pitt faculty now have opportunities for more intensive professional development through the HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/fds/sidi/" Summer Instructional Development Institute. The SIDI provides opportunities for faculty to work on specific course development activities and to upgrade their pedagogical knowledge. School- and department-based programs enable faculty with similar needs and interests to learn about new teaching methods and materials that are particularly applicable to their own disciplines. These programs are scheduled to be easily accessible to the target faculty group. TA and TF support has expanded through the creation of a new handbook on teaching that is designed for graduate teaching assistants, the expansion of the University's HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/fds/ta_ntao.htm" New TA Orientation, creation of workshops designed to meet teaching needs identified by schools and their TAs, and the development of a graduate student seminar in teaching. A new HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/tef/" Teaching Excellence Fair gives faculty an opportunity to learn about instructional innovations funded through the Provost's Innovation in Education grants program. Roundtable discussions of effective teaching methods and demonstrations of new instructional technologies are other favorite components of the Fair. Instructional Support CIDDE's third major function, Instructional Support, encompasses services related to the delivery of instruction. These include, for example, the design of technology enhancements for the classroom, the delivery and operation of classroom media, and the administration of a computer-based testing system. CIDDE's support for interactive television and Blackboard are other examples of instructional support services. Classroom media services at the University of Pittsburgh have developed and expanded dramatically since 1995. As the world has been transitioning from film and videotape to digital formats, CIDDE has worked to facilitate this change at Pitt. Greater technical complexity in the classroom has transformed the nature of service and support on campus. For example, the dramatic growth in the use of notebook computers in the classroom has had a significant impact on how Media Services supports faculty, requiring a higher skill level in our operators. Our "classroom hotline" helps staff troubleshoot problems and offers faculty a sense of security when using classroom technology. While this kind of support may be difficult to quantify, it is crucial to the successful use of instructional technologies on the Pitt campus. Special one-time allocations from the Provost have enabled CIDDE to acquire an inventory of state-of-the-practice instructional equipment that maintains Pitt's position as an instructional technology leader. This funding was justified by a five-year plan that analyzes and projects classroom media needs and equipment life cycles. The purchases made with this funding include notebook PC's and a wide range of other technologies to accommodate the diverse needs of Pitt's faculty. The acquisition of additional equipment, combined with the creation of one additional IMS staff position, has enabled CIDDE to significantly enhance its classroom support services. New support services and technologies require new and innovative management and distribution methods. Communication between the faculty and the CIDDE Media Services staff must be efficient and effective. To this end, CIDDE has created software applications to allow faculty to order classroom support services conveniently online. The development and deployment of OPUS and OPUSWeb, CIDDE's administrative system for instructional media services, has made it easier to record, track and fill media service requests. It also enables CIDDE to access usage statistics and other information that facilitates continual improvement in HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/ims/" media services. The HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/classrooms/" \t "_blank" renovation of campus classrooms at Pitt has progressed significantly since 1995 and is closely related to CIDDE's planning for instructional technology deployment. More than 100 classrooms have been renovated to include display devices, source audio/video equipment, and network connections to allow easy access to BlackBoard, the Internet, and other network resources. CIDDE, in conjunction with the Classroom Management Team, has designed a technology plan to accommodate each specific facility as well as the teaching needs of the faculty using it. Pitt's original ITV infrastructure, deployed in the mid 1980's, has been upgraded and new sites were added in Oakland and at the regional campuses. Lower cost IP connections have allowed a broader range of users to take advantage of these technologies. The distributed testing system administered by CIDDE includes both paper and HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/testing/" computer-based testing capabilities for academic exams. Originally designed to meet the needs of faculty and students in UESP, the testing network includes facilities at all of Pitt's campuses as well as at seven regional locations such as community libraries. Now these services are open to non-UESP courses. University Support CIDDE's fourth major function makes its specialized resources available, as appropriate, to the broader University community. For example, the University's small photographic and electronic imaging staff is housed within CIDDE, but a significant portion of its work is non-instructional. Having these resources as part of the instructional development unit at Pitt has the advantage of enabling their strategic use for support of instruction. At the same time, these specialized services can be made available to the University community with far greater cost efficiency. This section of the narrative describes some examples of the kinds of University support CIDDE provides that is not directly related to instruction. The instructional contributions of the staff mentioned here are addressed in the narrative and links of the first three CIDDE functions. Discovery Weekend offers a good example of the broad University services of CIDDE. For this special event, graphic designers, video producers, photographers, media services staff, engineers and others assisted in the design of presentation materials and the delivery and documentation of the event's high-profile activities. Another illustrative example of CIDDE in this broader University role is creation of the Technology Atlas for a New Pennsylvania. As part of Pennsylvania's Link-to-Learn project, staff from CIDDE's Video Production and Electronic Graphics and Design departments researched, wrote, designed, and arranged for printing over 50,000 copies of the report disseminated across the state and around the world by the Governor. CIDDE classroom engineers designed audio/video solutions for University meeting spaces such as the J. Wray Connolly Ballroom in Alumni Hall and for the William Pitt Union Ballroom and Assembly Rooms. CIDDE photographers and graphics artists collaborated to create updated multimedia web pages describing Pitt's Nationality Rooms, including virtual reality views of room interiors and audio descriptions of the room's history and features. CIDDE video producers have created dozens of videos documenting University events, such as the 9/11 memorial and United Way Day of Caring, and providing valuable staff information resources, such as an explanation of the Staff Classification System for the Office of Human Resources. CIDDE photographers collaborated with Frederick A. Hetzel of University Press to update and reprint works from Charles Morse Stotz's "Early Architecture of Western Pennsylvania," a WPA project, in a new addition. Outreach CIDDE staff welcome opportunities to exchange ideas with colleagues at other universities and to represent Pitt's many instructional achievements. For example, CIDDE supports the University's leadership role in the HYPERLINK "http://www.pitt.edu/%7Eciddeweb/ltc/" \t "_blank" Learning Technology Consortium, a collaborative of nine universities initiated by Vice Provost Robert F. Pack. In addition to working on instructional technology issues with recognized colleagues at other universities, Pitt has contributed to two published volumes on instructional technology and is leading a research study involving faculty from seven of the nine institutions. Staff at CIDDE are active in professional organizations and scholarly groups. The number of presentations and publications they contribute is extensive. A number of CIDDE staff members teach at Pitt or at other local institutions. CIDDE staff have developed products that are of interest outside the University. Instructional video programs, such as Navigating the Sea of Information and Voices From the Classroom enjoy widespread distribution. A compact disk created by CIDDE for continuing education in social work now is marketed nationally to facilitate access to instruction on this important topic. Most recently, media services managers at the Consortium of College and University Media Centers (CCUMC) and EDUCAUSE conferences greeted CIDDE's OPUS system for scheduling and managing media services with enthusiasm.
