Please join the Indiana and ɫӰ communities for an evening with Roosevelt Montás on March 2, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. in Gorell Auditorium, , on ɫӰ’s main campus. There is no charge for this event, and all are welcome.
“Rescuing Socrates: How the Great Books Changed My Life and Why They Matter for a New Generation” recounts Montás’ story of growing up in the Dominican Republic and then in Queens, New York. He explains how reading the classics of Western thought and literature changed his life and why those books still matter today, especially to members of historically marginalized communities.
Montás went on to earn a PhD from Columbia University and founded a Great Books program for low-income high school students who aspire to be the first in their families to attend college.
Montás is a nationally recognized speaker on the value of a university education and the role that the humanities play in the development of citizen-leaders.
Roosevelt Montás joins us as part of ɫӰ's Big Ideas: Transformative Culture and the Professions and with the generous assistance of the Teagle Foundation – National Endowment of the Humanities and ɫӰ partners: Office of Social Equity; College of Arts and Humanities; Department of History; Department of English; Liberal Studies; and Center for Teaching Excellence.
