Yong Colen recently served as a Fulbright Specialist Program Fellow in the Russian Federation.
In November and December of 2019, Colen, a faculty member in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, visited in Siberia for a six-week project. During this time he provided feedback on the newly formed Tomsk International Science Program, and gave workshops for faculty, staff, and students on the theme "Conceptual Teaching and Learning."
Colen's talks included: "Actualizing Student-centered Teaching and Learning," "Developing Pedagogical Content Knowledge: The Singapore Model," and "Applying Polya's Problem-Solving Strategies: Heuristic."
The pairs highly qualified US academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn about other cultures while building capacity at their overseas host institutions.
Yong Colen received his doctorate in mathematics education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Previously, he taught at Hawken School, Ohio, and Monroe College, New York. Recent professional work includes providing workshops for teachers at DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activity) schools in Okinawa, Japan, and Daegu, South Korea, and his current projects include writing a mathematics textbook for liberal arts students and researching teachers' understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
