The theme for Week 4 of National Preparedness Month is 鈥淭each Youth about Preparedness,鈥 which encourages parents to talk to their kids about preparing for disasters and emergencies and what to do in case they are separated. You are never too young to be prepared for an emergency.
These are some ways to teach youth about preparedness:
- Talk about the types of disasters and emergencies that can happen where you live.
- Include them in the planning process.
- Show them where your emergency kit is and the items included in it.
- Discuss an evacuation plan and meeting location at your home.
- Take time to answer questions they might have, and be prepared to deal with fears and worries.
It is also important to teach youth what to do when a disaster happens when they aren't home, or when they aren't with you, so they feel prepared. has educational tools and information to teach youth about disaster and emergency preparedness.
