Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching International Teachers welcome reception

As the College of Education and Human Services, our staff and faculty are often looked to as leaders in pedagogy and communications technology, especially as we teach and create messages to reach all those we serve.

In 2013, we partnered with the Office of Social Equity to address the need to gauge diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence within our college. A subsequent survey informed that members of the college were either polarized in their perceptions or uncertain about what our college does and does not do with respect to diversity and multiculturalism. As a response to this disconnect, a college-wide taskforce created a Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan. This taskforce later evolved into the Diversity and Inclusion Standing Committee (DISC).

One of our primary goals as educators is to prepare students to interact effectively in an increasingly diverse and multicultural world. The committee now meets monthly to address diversity-related issues in the College to accomplish this goal. The conceptual framework that undergirds the Diversity Action Plan has two components to it: cycles and dimensions. The four cycles, pictured below, depict totality, integration, and continuity. The seven dimensions of the college functions are as follows:

  • Curriculum
  • Teaching
  • Scholarship
  • Professional development and service
  • College and departmental operations

DISC is committed to pursuing these action steps through subcommittees and sharing tangible outcomes.
