Assistant professor of piano at Duquesne University, Kevin Lee Sun will perform a solo piano recital on Monday, September 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall (second floor of Sutton Hall). The program will include works by Stockhausen, d’Anglebert, and Brahms, as well as more recently composed works by Hyo-Shin Na and Colin Kemper.
The sole pianist to be named finalist of the 2021 Berlin Prize for Young Artists in Germany, Sun interprets music with “probing seriousness” (Performing Arts Monterey Bay) and “a stunningly beautiful palette of colors” (Peninsula Reviews). He has performed a diverse repertoire around the world, including at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna, and the Banff Centre in Canada.
Sun’s exciting 2024–25 season is representative of his multi-faceted artistic interests. Highlights include the release of Sun's debut album The People United—his recording of Frederic Rzewski's masterpiece, “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” (1975)—on the Navona Records label; his performance engagements throughout western Pennsylvania, the West Coast, and the South, where he will present his recital program The Essence of the Soul; and his regional premieres of works by living composers Hyo-shin Na and Colin Kemper that he himself commissioned.
A native of Sacramento, CA, Sun holds degrees from Stanford University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Eastman School of Music. With his diverse educational background, Sun has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles of original research in the fields of psychiatry, student mentorship, and Platonic philosophy.
